Remedies for Ear Infections

In homeopathy, a child with a history of ear infections may do best when treated constitutionally. If so, you’ll need to see a qualified homeopath. For acute ear infections with sudden pain that’s sharp, intense and throbbing, consider belladonna. The right side is more commonly affected, and the pain may extend into the face and jaw.
Pulsatilla is generally useful for right-sided earaches. The ear may feel stopped up, and onset may follow a stuffy nose or cold. The pain is worse with warmth, and the child is often clingy or weepy.
Hepar sulphuris is for ear infections accompanied by profuse discharge, often foul smelling and bloody. The pain can resemble that of being stuck with a pin and is better with warmth and worse with cold. Often the child covers his or her ear with the hand.
Chamomilla is beneficial for earaches with intense tearing or stitching pain. Chamomilla children are fussy and irritable, wanting to be carried, then wanting to be put down again once you’ve picked them up. The pain often improves when the ear is covered.
Silica is for more chronic infections or unresolved episodes of suppuration (discharge of pus). The ear feels plugged up and may itch or make clicking sounds. The child may complain of diminished hearing.
